Montolieu, originally known as Montis Olivis or Mount of Olives, sits atop a rocky ridge between the Alzeau and Dure Rivers, nestled at the base of the Montagne Noire. This picturesque village in the Aude region of France is surrounded by Cathar castles, caves, abbeys, forests, fields, rivers, and lakes, offering a rich historical and natural landscape. Its notable lineage includes figures such as Charlemagne, who founded the Monastery of St. Jean de Mallast in 800 AD, and Colbert, Louis XIV's minister, who established a renowned Royal Manufactory exporting high-quality woolen cloth. In 1146, the Viscount of nearby Carcassonne fortified the village, and its early inhabitants, aside from nuns and monks, thrived by cultivating vineyards, olive groves, and harnessing the power of river torrents for textile and paper mills. However, the changing times and progress resulted in a decline, with the population shrinking from over 3,000 inhabitants to around 900 over fifty years ago.
A passionate book lover played a vital role in the modern-day renaissance of Montolieu as a book village, known as a "village du livre." Today, it attracts numerous visitors each year, both bibliophiles and non-bibliophiles alike. Even those less inclined towards books can enjoy the village's outdoor activities, taking advantage of Montolieu's natural and historic treasures.
