Description:

Description for B&B:

Located in the heart of the Poitou Charentes countryside, 60 km south of the Loire, you will find the charming medieval village of Airvault. Jo Cottrell extends a warm and relaxed welcome at The Voltaire Bed and Breakfast, a magnificent 19th Century mansion home.

Situated near the center of Airvault, The Voltaire offers 4 large, individually styled and furnished double and twin bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms. Our main priority at The Voltaire is to ensure that you have a pleasant and comfortable stay, whether it's for a night, a few days, a week, or even longer. The peaceful atmosphere and cozy ambiance of The Voltaire often result in guests sleeping longer than expected! As a result, we serve breakfast as late as 12pm.

Each of our guest bedrooms features an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower. We provide luxurious thick bath sheets and hand towels, as well as handmade soaps. The bedrooms are furnished with either a kingsize bed or twin single beds, all adorned with 100% cotton bed linen and high thread count soft Egyptian cotton duvet covers. The mattresses are deep sprung to ensure optimal support and comfort. If needed, we can arrange for a temporary bed in your room to accommodate a child under 12. All rooms offer ample space to store or hang your clothes, along with comfortable easy chairs.

Our bed and breakfast also features a cozy library, complete with an open fire during the winter months. The library offers a selection of books and board games for your enjoyment. Additionally, we have a sitting room with a more tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxation.

When the weather permits, we invite our guests to enjoy the outdoor space. The walled garden at the rear of the property is bathed in early morning sun, making it an ideal spot for breakfast on the lawn. As the sun moves, the garden provides shade during the hottest part of the day, ensuring a cooler environment. The front area of the house features a raised swimming pool, a true sun trap that enjoys the sun throughout the day (available during warmer months only).

Our continental breakfast includes freshly baked croissants and baguettes from local bakeries, Airvault honey, homemade marmalade and conserves, fruit juice, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

Upon request, we offer evening meals that consist of 4 courses, accompanied by wine and/or soft drinks, as well as coffee. The price is 22 euros per adult and 12 euros per child under 12. We strive to use seasonal and local ingredients, ensuring a varied dining experience that reflects the time of year. With prior notice, we can also provide picnics for your convenience.

In this idyllic and untouched part of France, we enjoy incredibly high annual sunshine levels, second only to the Côte d'Azur. Additionally, our location places us in the heart of the largest sunflower growing region in France, adding to the beauty of the surroundings.

As we are on the outskirts of the village, with its stunning architecture, most amenities are within walking distance. These include bakeries, butchers, restaurants, bars, banks with cash machines, a chemist, and a local market every Saturday morning that sells fresh local produce.

Surrounded by historic towns and villages, breathtaking countryside, and swimming lakes, we are also within reach of major attractions such as Futuroscope, a virtual reality theme park, Vallée des Singes, a monkey park where you can interact with the animals, Puy du Fou, a medieval theme park known for its spectacular shows, and La Venise Verte, Marais Poitevins' intricate waterway system that can be explored by flat bottomed boats. Being only 60 km south of the Loire Valley, you can also explore the numerous chateaux and vineyards in the area. This is just a glimpse of what our region has to offer, and more information can be found on our website.

We provide unlimited free WiFi access, and online real-time bookings can be made through our website.

Directions

GPS Coordinates:

46° 49' 32" N
00° 08' 21" W

If you are coming from the direction of Poitiers, take the D725 road into Airvault. Follow the signs for Centre Ville. You will pass the Gendarmerie on your right, then continue down the hill and past the Church and Market Hall, also on your right. At the end of the road, you will reach a roundabout. Groupama will be on your right, and we are located opposite Groupama on the left, with the Hotel du Cygne across the street. Look for the recycling bins on the corner next to our garage. There is parking available in front of the house/garage, but if it is full, you can use the public car park diagonally opposite on the other side of the roundabout.

If you are coming from the directions of Parthenay, Bressuire, or Thouars, join the D725 road towards Airvault. Ignore the first turning signposted Airvault centre ville with 4 flagpoles and the town's name in flowers at the junction. Keep going straight on the D725 road. Pass the town name, cross the river, and shortly after crossing the river, you will encounter a sharp right-hand corner with a left turn off. Take this turning onto D27 Rue de la Gare. Go over the level crossing and keep left at the fork. This will lead you to a roundabout. The Hotel du Cygne will be on your right, a car park on your left, and on the third corner, you will find Groupama. Our house is located on the opposite corner.
