The Buttonwood Inn on Mt. Surprise, located in North Conway, New Hampshire, is a highly esteemed country inn bed and breakfast that is renowned for its exceptional service, warm hospitality, and meticulous attention to detail.Situated on over five acres of serene and secluded fields and forests, just two miles away from the charming village of North Conway, The Buttonwood Inn on Mt. Surprise provides a tranquil rural setting while still offering convenient proximity to all the area has to offer.
Housed in a charming farmhouse dating back to the 1820s, the inn retains its inviting country ambiance with its beautiful wide pine floors, antique furnishings, cozy quilts, and delightful stenciling.
As a proud member of the Select Registry since 1999, The Buttonwood Inn is one of only 25 establishments to have received the prestigious America's Favorite Inns Award. It has also been featured in the esteemed publication Classic American Homes in an article titled "White Mountain Wonderland."
Bill, the proprietor, is always delighted to assist guests in planning their day, providing valuable insights into the local area, and sharing the best ways to navigate from one place to another.
Guests can unwind at the inn with their favorite book, while keeping an eye out for the occasional sightings of deer, wild turkeys, moose, hawks, or hummingbirds. Additionally, the inn offers a wide range of outdoor recreational activities in the nearby Mt. Washington Valley, which are detailed in our comprehensive Area Activities section.
For a truly relaxing experience, guests can enjoy afternoon tea and freshly baked treats in front of one of the inn's traditional wood-burning fireplaces, found in either the spacious living room or the inviting Mt. Surprise Room on cooler days. Alternatively, they can choose to bask in the sun or find shade in one of our comfortable Adirondack chairs, take a refreshing dip in our heated pool, or indulge in a soothing soak in our open-air hot tub, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the mountains and forest during the day or the enchanting starry sky at night. Our friendly staff will gladly assist in making dinner arrangements at one of the many exceptional restaurants in the area, which offer a wide range of local and international cuisines in both casual and fine dining settings.

Directions
Starting from North Conway Village, turn east onto Kearsarge Street at the traffic light on Rt. 16. Drive 1.5 miles until you reach a stop sign. Go straight across the intersection onto Mt. Surprise Road and continue uphill, bearing left, until you reach the Inn.
If coming from Boston, take I-95 North to Portsmouth, NH. Then, take Spaulding Tpk. North until it ends. From there, take Rt. 16 to North Conway. Alternatively, you can take Rt. 93N to Exit 23 (Rt 104E), then take Rt. 25E to Rt. 16N to North Conway.
If you prefer to bypass the Shopping District, follow the new North-South Road that connects Kearsarge Street with Route 302. You can use MapQuest and enter the address 64 Mt. Surprise Road, Bartlett, NH 03838. The GPS coordinates are 4404 38.39N and 71 07 10.07W, with an elevation of 700.
From New York City, take NY thruway North (Major Deegan) to Rt. 287 East to 684 North to I-84 East. Then, take I-90 (MA Tpk.) East to Rt. 290 North (Exit 10). From there, take 290 North to I-495 to I-95, and follow the directions from Boston.
If coming from Portland, Maine, travel on Route 302 West until you reach North Conway. Then, follow the directions to bypass the Shopping District or the directions from North Conway Village.
From Montreal, travel East to Sherbrooke and then go South on I-91. Follow the directions below.
For those coming from the Northwest, take I-91 South to St. Johnsbury, VT. Then, take I-93 South to Littleton, NH. Drive on Rt. 302 East through Crawford Notch, which will merge with Rt. 16 from the North in Glen. Continue south on Route 302/16. After approximately 3.3 miles, look for a highway sign for "The Buttonwood Inn - Hurricane Mt. Road". Take the SECOND left, and go 0.3 miles. Turn left onto Hurricane Mt. Road and drive 1.2 miles. Then, turn left onto Mt. Surprise Road, where you will see a black highway sign for The Buttonwood Inn pointing left. Bear to the left, and the road will turn to dirt. You will see our sign straight ahead and our driveway just to the right of the sign.
If you are on I-93 in Lincoln, NH, during the summer (May to mid-November), take the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) for approximately 24 miles. Then, turn left onto Bear Notch Road (closed in winter). Follow Bear Notch Rd. until you reach a blinking light in the center of Bartlett. Turn right at the light onto Rt. 302 East and follow the directions above from Glen. This route offers beautiful scenery and avoids North Conway traffic. In winter, take the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) to the end in Conway at the intersection of Rt. 16. Follow the directions below to bypass North Conway's shopping district.
If you are coming from the South and want to bypass the Shopping District, take a left onto Washington St. at the first set of traffic lights in Conway while traveling on Rt. 16. After 1/2 mile, bear left at the fork onto West Side Rd. Follow this road until it ends at a stop sign, then turn right onto River Road. When you reach the stop lights, continue straight through. At the stop sign in front of John Fuller school, turn right. At the next stop sign, turn left onto Mechanic Street. Finally, at the following stop sign, turn left onto Kearsarge Street. Now, follow the directions above from North Conway Village.
For those arriving by air, the approximate travel times are as follows:
